About Our Center
Greenbelt Children’s Center is located in the Greenbriar Condominium Community Building on the corner of Greenbelt Road and Hanover Parkway. The child care center is located on the lower level of the building surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds. The center opened in 1976 and was acquired as Greenbelt Children’s Center in 1990.
Greenbelt Children’s Center core teaching staff are all dedicated to the mission and some have worked together for over 25 years at this location. The teachers and director meet or exceed the requirements of the Maryland State Department of Education, Office of Child Care. The center has been accredited since 1999 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and was just recently re-accredited through the year 2028.
In April 2012, the Center’s Director, Flora Gee, received the Judith P. Hoyer Award
from Prince George’s Early Childhood Interagency Committee at the Celebrate Children Conference
. GCC received a Small Business of the Year Award
from the Prince Georges County Board of Trade in 2005 and the Child Care Challenge Award
from the Maryland Women Legislators in the late 1990s. GCC has Level 5 rating with the Maryland State Department of Education, the highest level possible, and was the first center in Maryland to reach that level.
Classroom 3, for 4 -year-old children in our private accredited Pre-kindergarten program and School Age Summer Program, is located to the immediate right of the front door entrance in the open space of the center, with the Director’s office immediately adjacent to Classroom 3. Classroom 2 has 2.5-3 year olds and is on the left as you enter the center, and Classroom 1, which is the Prince Georges Public School Pre-k, is at the far left adjacent to Room 2.
The facility has a full kitchen, a large walk-in closet, and an office for staff located at the back of the center, which is shared by all three classrooms. A drinking fountain, separate bathrooms for boys and girls, and sinks for handwashing are centrally located. The center has a private playground with climbers, slides, a sandbox, swings, a playhouse, mud kitchen, construction blocks, an outdoor easel, water play tables, and a storage shed for wheeled vehicles and movable large muscle equipment. Other amenities at this facility include swimming and wading pools adjacent to the playground and available to our program each summer. There is a large room for meetings or special programs, made available to our center throughout the year.
